Asset Protection Part 2 – Disability Insurance

MINT HILL, NC – Many of us are familiar with disability insurance, but how many of you reading this have actually taken the steps to see how much you have either with your employer or privately?

This type of insurance is used to maintain the same amount of income currently being received.  It protects your current standard of living.  None of us like to think about bad things happening, but in the event of a significant disability, most will have trouble maintaining their current standard of living if they no longer can do their current occupation.  Without getting too deep into the weeds, there are three types of coverage.  Own occupation, modified own occupation, and any occupation.

  1. Own Occupation – considers you totally disabled when you cannot perform the duties of your own occupation and are under the care of a physician.
  2. Modified Own Occupation – considers you totally disabled when you cannot perform the duties of your occupation, you are not working in another occupation, and are under the care of a physician.
  3. Any Occupation – considers you totally disabled when you cannot perform the duties of ANY occupation and are under the care of a physician.
