Stanly Community College (SCC), in conjunction with the Albemarle Rotary Club, held the World War II (WWII) Veterans of Stanly County luncheon on Thursday, May 10, at the Stanly Regional Family and Education Center in Albemarle. This year, 21 veterans attended the annual luncheon. WWII was one of the largest and most violent armed conflicts in the history of humankind. Although nearly seven decades separates us from that war, the love for these veterans is as strong as ever.
Retired Major General Robert Stonestreet, USAF, Luncheon Committee Chairman and SCC Trustee Chair, stated, “The Albemarle Rotary Club along with Stanly Community College offer our sincere gratitude to Dana Mannes and First Bank for sponsoring the meals for the WWII veterans, guests and entertainers. It is gratifying for all involved to honor the selfless service of our Stanly County WWII veterans and the sacrifice their families endured. The speaker, retired Brigadier General Mabry (Bud) Martin, is a good friend with whom I served for a number of years. His excellent speech was about his late father-in-law, and his WWII experience, that was typical of many who stepped up and served. The entertainment provided by the 82nd Airborne Division’s All American Chorus was a world-class performance. I want to thank all those who assisted in making this annual event a huge success.”
Dean Martin, Senior Vice President/Regional Executive, First Bank, commented, “First Bank is honored to support our Veterans and the service they have given to protect the freedoms that the citizens of the United States of America enjoy. We are thankful for the sacrifices that they and their families have made to make our country great.”
Bill Tucker and Gary Tucker from the Locust Historical Society & Museum provided memorabilia for the veterans and guests to enjoy. Memorabilia included pictures of WWII veterans, uniforms, newspaper articles, ammunition, artillery, and more. Individuals may view photographs taken during the WWII luncheon at www.stanly.edu.
