Albemarle, NC – The Stanly Community College (SCC) Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. and Mrs. Michael R. Taylor Scholarship Endowment. Dr. Taylor and his wife, Alice, have pledged$20,000 to the Foundation. In addition to pledging the $20,000, they will also be donating $1,000 annuallyin scholarship support, which will be earmarked for the principal to grow on the $20,000 endowment.
Dr. Taylor served as the third president of Stanly Community College from 1996 until 2011. He is a veteran of the NC Community College System and retired with 32 years of service. He worked at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown and Caldwell Community College in Lenoir.
Alice taught in school systems in Lenoir and Wilson counties along with Asheboro, Kinston and Hickory City systems before joining the faculty at Albemarle Middle School in 1990. She was named Stanly County Teacher of the Year in 2001. Alice retired in 2003 from teaching after more than three decades in the field.
Dr. Taylor noted, “Collectively, Alice and I spent over 60 years in education with over 30 of those years in Stanly County. Working in the county was a great experience and a great opportunity for both of us. We hope this scholarship will provide opportunities for others.”
Lisa Burris, SCC Foundation Chair, stated, “Dr. Taylor has always been an advocate and friend to Stanly Community College. Once again, he has shown his love and commitment through his own generosity to the Stanly Community College Foundation. We thank both of them for their donation, and know it will benefit our Foundation for many years to come.
Dr. John Enamait, SCC President, stated, “On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff I would like to thank former SCC President Dr. Mike Taylor and his wife, Alice, for their generous and remarkable gift to Stanly Community College. This contribution and endowment show their true generosity and passion to this institution and our community. We are fortunate to have this gift and are equally proud that they remain engaged with this institution.”
