INDIAN TRAIL, NC – On Wednesday October 7, Turning Point opened their newest Second Chance Boutique in Indian Land. Joining the other stores in Monroe and Waxhaw, this location on Highway 74 will allow new and returning shoppers a place to get great gently used clothing, jewelry, home goods, and much more. Attending the ribbon cutting was the Union County Chamber of Commerce, a representative from the Town of Indian Trail, James Estes representing Senator Thom Tillis, Turning Point Board Members, Second Chance Workers and Volunteers, and several local Indian Trail business owners.
Turning Point is Union County’s only Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Emergency Service. Their website, turningpointnc.org, states “Turning Point’s vision is that all people will have safe and healthy relationships, free from domestic abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.” The Second Chance Boutiques offer a way to support Turning Point’s mission and services while also supporting their community. During the 2019-2020 Fiscal Year, Turning Point completed 507 crisis calls for domestic violence, engaged 412 survivors with a counselor, provided 541 advocacy services to children, provided 22 hospital accompanists to survivors for medical procedures, and presentd Turning Point’s Teen Dating Violence Program to 429 teens. They also assist with finding and furnishing accommodations as well as many other services survivors will need to stand on their own.
Jessie Lindberg, Executive Director of Turning Point, shared, “Our organization relies heavily on the revenue from our stores for our programs serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Another store will help us to remain sustainable and strong and provide a revenue source that we control, which makes us less reliant on grants and government funding, which can often be very unpredictable. It’s important to remember that our clients are able to shop at our stores for anything they might need, from clothing when they first come to us to furniture and household items when they move into a home of their own. So, these stores serve many positive purposes for our organization and those we serve.”
“We chose Indian Trail because we really wanted to have a presence in that area of our county, which is growing very rapidly,” continued Lindberg. “We also loved the visibility on 74 and the synergy we’ll have with the neighboring tenants,” she added. “We rely on donations of gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, home décor and household items to fill our stores! While we will not be taking donations at this location, because it is not configured the way our other stores are for donation drop offs, we need our community members to donate items at our other three stores, and much of that will make its way to the Indian Trail store. We also always need volunteers to sort through donations and clean and steam items before they are put out on the floor.”
