Indy and Butler Split Season Series- Monday Night Game

MINT HILL, NC – On Monday the Independence Patriots baseball team made the short trip to Butler High School to face their arch-rivals in a Southwestern 4A Conference baseball game.

On the strength of a dominant pitching performance by Ashton Wolfe, the home team was able to make quick work of the Patriots squad taking a 10-0 conference win.

Wolfe allowed only two hits, a third-inning single by Wilson Lohrer and a third-inning bunt by Sam Merli.  Wolfe went the entire game giving up three walks while striking out six to pick up the win for the Bulldogs.

After retiring the Patriots in the top of the first, the Bulldogs plated three runs in their first turn at-bat.  Alex Angelon led off with a single to center field. He stole second and advanced to third on the throw to second.  Canon Pierce was awarded first base on catcher interference.  Matt Kenney came to the plate and drove in Angelon on an infield hit.  Ole Swenson reached an error scoring Pierce.  Butler scored its third run on a single by Jacob Simka and led 3-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, Indy went down in order.  In the bottom of the second inning, the Bulldogs added two more runs to its tally.  Hudson Deese blasted a double to left field.  On a pick-off play at second, the ball was thrown into center field and Deese ended up on third base.  Pitcher Ashton Wolfe hit a sacrifice fly scoring Deese.  Jacob Simka reached an error and scored on a Matt Kenney single. And Butler took a 5-0 lead at the end of two full innings.

In the top of the third, Indy had two batters to get on base.  Sam Merli reached on a bunt and Wilson Lohrer got an infield hit, but the Patriots could not score.

The bottom half of the inning was Butler’s most productive of the night.  The Bulldogs scored four runs on four hits and one walk.  Ole Swenson led off with a single to left field.  Carson Carver reached on an infield hit scoring Swenson.  Hudson Deese came to the plate and reached on an infield hit to score Carver.  Deese wound up on third base on a passed ball and scored on an Ashton Wolfe sacrifice fly to center.  Alex Angelon reached on a walk and scored on Canon Pierce’s single to right field and the Bulldogs led 9-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Peyton Hulighan scored Butler’s last run.  Drawing a walk Hulighan came home on an Ole Swenson double to center field to make the score 10-0.

In the top of the fifth, Indy placed only one base runner.  Brayden Pimental drew a one-out walk.  Ashton Wolfe struck out Indy’s next two batters ending the game with Butler taking a 10-0 conference win.
