MINT HILL, NC – The Patriot Classic Drill Tournament was hosted by Independence High School AFJROTC NC022. The Independence cadets hosted a dozen schools from North and South Carolina who participated in the tournament or drill meet. The 12 schools that participated include East Mecklenburg High School, West Mecklenburg, South Mecklenburg, Rocky River, Ragsdale, Maiden, Northwestern, Tuscola, Clover High School, and James Byrnes from South Carolina. There were over 425 participants, instructors, parents, and friends enjoying the event and festivities. The Air National Guard and the local Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard recruiters were the Judges.
The top four teams were as follows:
- Clover High School
- Northwestern High School
- East Mecklenburg High School
- Tuscola, High School
The teams competed in various military-style drills and were graded by their overall performance and precision.
JROTC programs are offered at many area high schools to develop teamwork, build character, and encourage good citizenship and patriotism. Also, they ensure young people are mindful of the “Core Values” when joining the Cadet program, which exemplifies and instills in high school students the values of integrity, service, excellence, reverence, and respect.

All the teams did an outstanding job; the competition was extremely close, and it was difficult for the judges to select the four top teams. However, like in real life, not everyone goes home with a trophy. The top performers are rewarded for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to achieving excellence.
