MINT HILL, NC – Garret Vickers of Scout Troop 140 recently celebrated earning his Eagle Scout Achievement Award on June 12, 2021.
Vickers accomplished all the Eagle Scout requirements when he earned the Eagle rank. At the ceremony, the Marine Corps League, Detachment 750 Kelles White, former Commandant presented the young man with a Citizenship Citation and a Challenge Coin. The American Legion Post 555 Commander presented him with the Post Citizenship Medal and Citation along with a Certificate of Achievement from the National Commander.
Vickers’ Eagle Scout project was a restoration of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church Columbarium Gardens, which included restoring a Gazebo, building an Arbor, and restoring the grounds. He actually earned the Eagle rank in January of 2021.
The Eagle Scout is a huge honor; it’s the highest achievement attainable, and only 4% of all Scouts attain the rank after a lengthy review process. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by 2.5 million youth since its inception in 1911. Garret has joined an elite group of young men and will always be an Eagle Scout.
The requirements for an Eagle Scout include a minimum of 21 merit badges. The Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout Spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service and leadership. This includes an extensive service project such as the one mentioned above completed by Vickers. He had to plan, organize, lead, and manage the entire project. Eagle Scouts are presented with a medal and a badge that visibly recognizes all their individual accomplishments.
Additional recognition can be earned through Eagle Palms, which is awarded for completing additional tenure, leadership, and merit badges. Finally, those who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout have the opportunity to join the National Eagle Scout Association.
