MINT HILL, NC – For the first time in the school’s history, Queen’s Grant High School Lady Stallions not only had a winning season but also had five players named all-conference.
Three players – senior Anne Estelle Strawn, sophomore Sydney Reynolds, and freshman Abi Sawyers – were selected to the first team. Sophomore Carson Ouimet and freshman Kayla Purdy received honorable mention.
Under the direction of coach Don Nicholas, the young Lady Stallions posted their best record 10-5, and qualified for the state playoffs for the first time ever in their 13-year existence.
The coach has been the team’s biggest cheerleader all season and quickly recognized he had a solid group of upperclassman as well as some outstanding sophomores and freshmen to have a winning season, along with the nucleus to build a strong foundation for the future of the program.
The team finished highly ranked in the state at #26 in Class 1A competition and overall at #136 among all programs in the state. However, this writer must challenge the rankings as Pine Lake Prep (8-6) is ranked #23 and #128 statewide. The Stallions finished 10-5, and they beat Pine Lake head-to-head twice, so in my book, the Stallions deserve and earned a higher ranking, and this should be corrected.
Meanwhile, Abi Sawyers finished fourth offensively in the PAC-7 1A Conference with a BA .625, OBP .700, SLG .950, OPS 1.650 with 3 home runs. Anne Estelle Strawn completed her senior season 8th in the conference with a BA .524, OBP .596, SLG .904, OPS 1.501 with a homer. Sydney Reynolds finished with a BA .500, OBP .587, SLG .972, OPS 1.559 with 3 dingers. Carson Ouimet BA .455, OBP .500, SLG .659, OPS 1.159 with a solo homer. Kayla Purdy completed her season with a BA .436, OBP .542, SLG .692, OPS 1.542 with 1 home run.
Congratulations to the five Lady Stallions for their recognition in being selected to the PAC-7 1A All-Conference Team.
