MINT HILL, NC – The Town of Mint Hill kicked off a five-month long free concert series with the summer’s first Family Fun Night on Saturday, May 20.

For the second year in a row, the Family Fun Zone was sponsored by Mint Hill Orthodontics.

Due to continued construction on Veterans Park’s newly astroturfed soccer fields, the event took place across the parking lot on the softball field.  The Family Fun Zone was up and hopping in the east corner of the field at 6:30 pm with bounce houses and yard games.  With the help of volunteers from Arlington Baptist Church, kids enjoyed Giant Jenga, Checkers, Cornhole and more.

The Family Fun Zone is once again possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mint Hill Orthodontics.  “We just had a lot of fun last year, so we wanted to come back out again,” said Mint Hill Orthodontic Assistant Alyssa.  “Tonight we’re just promoting the business, giving away some free stuff and encouraging people to come and get their teeth straightened!”

A new sponsor this year is aerial photography company Droney Island.  Based in Rockwell, NC, Droney Island takes aerial photos for the Towns of Mooresville and Faith as well as big events like weddings.  Another new sponsor for Family Fun Night is Creation Acre, an academic enrichment program located on Lawyers Road.  Geared toward homeschoolers, Creation Acre offers a full slate of enrichment classes as well as a project-based, Christ-centered microschool with a full curriculum.

“We’re accepting 20 -25 students [for the fall], and we’re going to have a full curriculum and electives,” said Founder Jasmine Williams, who runs the “homeschool away from home” with her husband Akeem.  “It’s really going to be student-led, so we’re providing structure, and we’re following their lead.”  Creation Acre is also offering 16 half day and full day summer camp options for children from ages 4-13.  Learn more about Creation Acre in a feature  in an upcoming issue of The Mint Hill Times.

Mint Hill Mayor Brad Simmons emphasized the importance of the event’s sponsors as he greeted the crowd.  “I want to thank you for coming out to our first Family Fun Night of the year,” he said.  “They’ve been a lot of fun in the past, but they wouldn’t be near as much fun or near as often if we didn’t have our great sponsors. Let’s give a big round of applause to Edifice Construction, Mint Hill Orthodontics, Droney Island Photography and one of our newest neighbors, Creation Acre.”

Coconut Groove Band kicked off the night’s entertainment at 7:00 pm with The Band’s “The Weight,” following it up with favorites from the likes of Tom Petty, The Allman Brothers, and Steely Dan.  CGB had the crowd on their feet all night long with an eclectic mix of late 70s and early 80s Classic Rock as well as a few more modern hits.  A few raindrops threatened to end the fun early around 8:30 pm, but the band’s dedicated fans were prepared with umbrellas!

The next free concert at Veterans Park will be Music & Brews night on June 17, featuring music from High Fidelity.  Make sure to follow Mint Hill Events and Town of Mint Hill on social media to stay up to date on everything happening this summer in Mint Hill.
