The Auctioneers Association of North Carolina (AANC) recently held its annual Convention and Rookie Bid Calling competition in Cary, NC. Every year, participants have an opportunity to learn about the auction method of marketing, network, participate in roundtables, and attend continuing education courses at the convention.
The AANC convention is open to any auctioneer, but in order to compete in the Rookie Bid Calling contest, entrants must be licensed auctioneers, residents of North Carolina, and a member in good standing with the AANC. Additionally, individuals cannot be a practicing Auctioneer for more than two years.
Keith Whitley, a Carolina Auction Academy (CAA) graduate, was named State Champion. Mr. Whitley will serve as an ambassador for the association and will be available to meet and support novice auctioneers throughout our state. Keith is a Real Estate Broker and Auctioneer specializing in agricultural land.
Chris Callahan took home Reserve Champion and Robert ”Bucky” Hathcock was named Runner-up, both are CAA graduates.
In addition to the top three winners being graduates of Carolina Auction Academy, last year’s Rookie Champion—Coleman Phifer, and the current State Champion—Aaron Maye, are both graduates of Carolina Auction Academy.
CAA Instructor Bill O’Neal noted, “All of these gentlemen did an excellent job. We are very proud of our students who can take their training from Carolina Auction Academy and put it into practice.”
The competition is broken into two categories. The first category consists of “The Chant/Effective Auctioneering”, and participants are scored on voice control, clarity, speed, rhythm, timing, article description, eye contact, body language, salesmanship and holding the audience’s attention. The second category consists of an interview, a series of questions related to the auction industry, and scored based upon presentation, response, substance, and ambassador quality.
The next Carolina Auction Academy class begins on August 27, 2018. For more information, please contact Betty O’Neal at (704) 991-0200 or CAA@stanly.edu. We encourage individuals to visit the College’s website at www.stanly.edu.
