Homeowner Electrical Panel Maintenance

CHARLOTTE – Your electrical panel is the heart of your electrical system. All the electricity flows through your home from this spot and is your first line of defense against electrical dangers. The breakers in your panel could use some exercise. We recommend doing this once or twice a year before you change your clocks forward or back for Daylight Saving since devices will need to be reset. Head to your panel.

You’ll find two rows of breakers down the middle of your panel. Regular circuit breakers will have a side-to-side toggle switch in them. All your circuits should be in the “on” position which is toward the center. One at a time you will be moving each of these toggles to the “off” position toward the outside of the panel. Then just simply push all of the toggles back to the “on” position. Easy. Some homes will have another type of breaker with a colored button on them, mostly ARC-fault breakers. For these breakers you will press the button to trip the breaker which will bring the toggle to the center (if it doesn’t trip, call an electrician). With some pressure push the toggle to “off” – outside of panel and then back to “on” – center of panel. After this “workout” you can now reset times on devices all over the house.

See more info on ARC-fault breakers and labeling your panel in future articles.
