Choosing A Terrific Dog Trainer (Part 2)

CHARLOTTE – Last week we talked about things to look out for when you’re seeking a dog trainer. There is NO regulation in dog training. It’s up to you to do your research and make sure that the trainer you choose will treat your dog the way you expect. When interviewing trainers, ask the questions we discussed last week and see if you agree with their answers.

Here are some certification initials that will help you know that a trainer is qualified to help:

  • CDBC = Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants)
  • IAABC ADT = Accredited Dog Trainer through IAABC
  • CBCC = Certified Behavior Consultant Canine through CCPDT (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers)
  • CPDT = Certified Professional Dog Trainer through CCPDT

Each of these certifications requires continuing education in order to maintain the certification. This means that these trainers are dedicated to learning the most modern, science-based training and teaching it to their clients. On both of the websites above, you can find a directory of certified professionals in your area.

The difference between a certified dog trainer and a certified behavior consultant? Dog trainers most often train for obedience cues and manners, such as sit, stay, come, place, and targeting. A certified behavior consultant works with severe behavior issues such as fear, anxiety, and aggressive behaviors, and implements training plans designed to help your dog navigate our world more easily.

As always, please feel free to reach out with questions!
