Coffee… healthy or not

It never seems to fail; research and science always seem to contradict itself. We have all heard that eggs are good for you, however it was not that long ago that eggs were bad for your health. Now it seems that eggs are both good and bad for your health. It was once thought that saturated fat was good for you, then Ancel Keys changed everyone’s mindset that fat was the enemy and caused heart disease. Now we know it is the type of fat that is either good or bad for your health. Well, now it is coffee’s turn.

If you Google Scholar coffee and health you will see almost 2 million links. A Pub-Med search will unveil thousands of research papers on coffee. In Cancer Science, July 2018, researchers were looking at the link of acrylamide in coffee with increases in endometrial and ovarian cancer in Japanese women. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) they classify acrylamide as a Group 2A probable carcinogen. According to this 2018 study, there appeared to be a beneficial link between coffee consumption and cancer risk in Japanese women. However, in a 2015 meta-analysis performed looking at numerous cancer risks and amounts of coffee consumed, there appeared to be an increased risk of coffee consumption and all cause cancer mortality. With all of these conflicting reports, how is a consumer supposed to know who to trust and what actions to take?

Well, we know one thing for certain, coffee beans contain numerous polyphenols and anti-oxidant properties that are beneficial for cellular function and overall health. We also know that growing, harvesting, storing and processing/roasting coffee beans involves, in many instances, toxic chemicals, pesticides, mycotoxins that all destroy or deteriorate much of the protective and beneficial components of coffee beans. We also know that using caffeine as a stimulant to get your day started will, over the long run, have damaging effects to neurotransmitters and adrenal gland function and can lead to hormone imbalances and other health related symptoms.

My takeaway here is if you love to have your cup or 2 or 10 of coffee each day, purchase a product that is organic, minimally processed, and as fresh as can be purchased and consumed from harvesting time to consumption time. Purity coffee is one such brand of coffee that I can confidently endorse and recommend. Or you can also replace your coffee bean with chicory root.
