CHARLOTTE – Can massage help those that suffer from the effects of diabetes? Yes. The most common symptom of diabetes that I find in my clients is diabetic neuropathy. Neuropathy is caused by high glucose levels which in turn damage the nerves (most often in hands and feet). Neuropathy can feel like tingling or needles in your extremities. Hands/feet might also feel very hot or very cold, with no relief. Neuropathy is worrisome because but it can affect your balance, make your walk unsteady, and make a fall more likely.
Massage can improve the way your extremities feel. It can stimulate nerves, helping to restore nerve paths and sensation. Massage can also increase elasticity in your extremities, allowing you to remain mobile. Diabetics are especially prone to sedentary lifestyles, so getting a regular massage can encourage the body to remain pliable. This is turn encourages the client to be more active. When bodies are in pain, they want to be still, but remember: our bodies are meant to remain in motion. With massage, remaining active is more likely.
Increased circulation is also a benefit to the diabetic’s body, improving the way your insulin works (it’s even recommended you check glucose levels a few hours after your massage to make sure your numbers are where they need to be). Of course, massage as a stress reliever is always good for anyone dealing with any chronic condition.
If you suffer from diabetes, talk to your therapist to see if you’re a good candidate for massage.
