CHARLOTTE – Everyone has probably heard of a deep tissue massage. Web MD describes it as “massage best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff “trouble spots” in your body. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage may be therapeutic — relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as a back sprain.”
I’ve had several people in during the last six months requesting deep tissue. I admit, I love using parts of a deep tissue massage, but it’s not always easy. One thing I’d suggest is talking with your therapist. Every massage is unique, you’re never going to have the same experience as someone else. I try to incorporate massage that will be most useful and get you to the goal you’ve described to me. If you give me your permission to do so, I’ll combine all types of modalities to give you the maximum experience.
I encourage you to talk with your massage therapist about what you usually enjoy or feel like you get the most from. Open your mind to see what the therapist has to offer and trust their opinion. Things are so very different even from eight years ago when I graduated from massage school. We’re seeing so much more information on the effectiveness of deep tissue, and how other modalities will get you the same effect without punishing your body.
