Choices Regarding Your Massage Therapist

CHARLOTTE – This week I’ve had several conversations with people regarding why one might choose a female therapist over a male therapist. We are fortunate in our industry that you hold the reins for who you want to get a massage from. I’ve been a client of places where, if you don’t specify what gender you want for your therapist, they will make the choice for you. Most times if I don’t specify a preference, I get a male therapist. Personally, I don’t mind this at all. In massage school, you get used to getting work done by different people daily. This is a great thing because you get to experience different techniques, different energies, and different touch.

Knowing who you’ll get as your therapist might be a way to limit your anxiety. Choosing a male over a female might be a personal choice for reasons you don’t have to share. Sometimes there are psychological reasons, perhaps there’s some sort of abuse that’s happened. Maybe it’s who you feel safest with. These are all valid reasons and should be honored when you make your appointment. Make sure you talk to whoever is making the appointment so they are aware of your choice.

If you’re not sure who to choose, decide what technique you’re looking for and find the expert at that technique. Choose who will honor your space and your goals, and remember, if you feel uncomfortable STOP THE MASSAGE. It’s okay. Communication is something encouraged in our industry with every visit.
