CHARLOTTE – One of the big vacation trends recently is the Dude Ranch Experience. What exactly is that. I will borrow from an explanation by a group of Dude Ranches;
For those researching, dude ranches are typically broken down into three different categories, those being: Working Ranches, Recreational Ranches, and Resort/Luxury Ranches. A few points on each type of Ranch:
Working Dude Ranch
A working dude ranch tends to focus on an authentic ranch experience, immersing visitors into daily life as a cowboy. Daily responsibilities include everything from cattle drives, tending horses, and ranch upkeep. Some level of horseback riding experience is typically suggested, as guests work side-by-side with wranglers on a daily basis.
Recreational Dude Ranch
A recreational dude ranch gravitates more towards sporting activities & relaxation. Hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, trap/skeet shooting, tennis, and swimming are just a sampling of daily activities typically available. Horseback riding remains a strong focus at these type ranches, although riding is by no means required for visiting guests.
Resort/Luxury Dude Ranch
At the final end of the spectrum are the resort/luxury dude ranches. These are boutique destinations which are Relais & Châteaux rated, Condé Nast Johansens selected, or Orvis Fly Fishing endorsed. On-site activities tend to include everything from a recreational ranch plus yoga, spas, golf, big game hunting, and meals prepared by nationally recognized chefs. Accommodations rival most 4 and 5 star destinations, as does the level of service.
