MINT HILL, NC – Does your child moan every time you suggest that they pick up a book and read? There are basically three reasons why children don’t like to read. Some children say that reading is too difficult. This is because that child does not have the skill set necessary to make reading fun. Vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension allow the young reader to be transported to another world through books. If the child lacks one of these skills (or even all three) reading can be laborious. One way to help a child who finds reading difficult is to read to them. Choose books that are above their reading level. These stories will be exciting to them and they will look forward to the storytime with you. You could also choose a funny book on your child’s reading level. You get them started by reading the first few pages and then allow them to take over. Next, there are children who say that reading is boring. For these children, it’s a good idea to let them read about topics that interest them. Does your child like baseball, hiking, astronomy, or ballet? Whatever their interests are, let them immerse themselves in that topic. Lastly, there are children who experience some type of anxiety when they read. Have this child read to a younger sibling or a stuffed animal. This will give the child practice and it isn’t as intimidating.
