MINT HILL, NC – Math is everywhere! Whether we realize it or not, we use math concepts all the time in our everyday lives. It is easy to teach your young child fundamental math skills. Because children are naturally curious about the world around them, there are many opportunities to weave in simple math lessons. You can help your toddler or preschooler begin to recognize numbers, proper number sequence, and eventually develop the ability to count. One way to introduce your young child to math is to play card games. Card games are a fun way for children to learn numbers up to 10.  Counting outdoors is another way to introduce numbers to your child. Counting trees, branches, flower petals, or leaves are a fun and engaging way to learn numbers. Model how to count these objects in order to encourage your child. Another good exercise is to ask your child to sort his toys by color, similarities, or differences. You could also introduce sorting by using coins. Your child can sort coins according to size without you introducing the value of each coin. Lastly, the kitchen is a great place to introduce math! Using simple baking recipes will give your child the opportunity to count out simple measurements with you and count out (and eat) the finished product! We use math for everyday tasks. These tips will help you introduce your child to math in fun and engaging ways. Introducing these concepts early helps to ensure that your child is on the right track academically.
