A faulty foundation can be very expensive to fix. Discovering the issue early on, however, can help keep the damage from spreading.
While water can certainly cause foundation issues, so can prolonged dryness. Foundations shift, but they shouldn’t shift so much that it causes issues within your home.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may have a foundation issue.
1. Doors Won’t Open Or Close Properly
When a foundation shifts, it may cause your doors to open and close oddly. A house settling can bring down the door jams. Even a small amount may cause an issue when you try to open or close a door within your home.
2. Unleveled Floor
If you notice the floor seems unlevel, it could be a sign of a foundation issue. Maybe a room with hardwood floors is sloping and you can actually roll a ball without any momentum.
An unleveled floor may be caused due to your foundation settling. Usually, it’s a sign of an issue as a house settling shouldn’t cause floors to slope.
3. Garage Door Gap
If you notice a gap at the bottom of the garage door where it meets the ground, this is a sign of a foundation issue. While the house will settle some, it shouldn’t cause a gap at the bottom of your garage door. This usually means the building has actually changed shape.
4. Wall Cracks near Windows and Doors
When a home settles too fast, it may cause cracks by windows and doors. If you notice these types of cracks starting to form, it’s time to call a foundation repair expert.
5. Windows are Hard to Open or Close
Similar to the issue with the doors mentioned above, when windows become difficult to open or close, it’s a sign of a foundation issue.
6. Caulk Expansion
Your home has caulk around the windows and doors. If it starts to expand, it means your home is moving, which causes the caulk to stretch. This can cause a very ugly issue and could be a sign of a foundation problem.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to have a foundation repair professional inspect your home. It could be something minor or even unrelated, but it could also be a sign of a bigger issue.
