Deadly Design
Author: Marion Moore Hill
Publisher : Pemberly Press
Pub. Date: September 2009
ISBN-978-1-935421-00-9
I love a good mystery. I especially love mysteries that tie to the past, like Indiana Jones or National Treasure. That is why I was especially fond of Deadly Design, the second novel in Marion Moore Hill’s Deadly Past Mystery Series (Book 1-Deadly Will). It takes place in Virginia and is a fascinating mystery full of historical fiction and murders connected to our founding fathers.
The story is about Millie Kirchner, a single mother and history buff who travels to Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest near Lynchburg, Virginia for an archeological dig. But her excitement is cut short when she arrives to find one of the interns of the dig has been murdered in nearby Highgrove House (secretly believed to have been designed by Jefferson himself). The police think everyone on the expedition, including Millie’s housemates, are suspects. But when a shocking discovery is made by the historical team, Millie must race against the clock to link the present day murders to a horrible event from the past.
I felt eager to uncover just how events in the time of Thomas Jefferson tie into the present-day events of the book, and I was drawn into both worlds with ease. If you missed book one, don’t worry; Hill makes it easy to jump right in to Millie’s adventures. Deadly Design’s intricate story proves that the sins of the past will always come back to haunt us, and is sure to thrill mystery and historical fiction fans alike.

The Adventures of Curlylocks and Stripperella: A Modern Mother’s Tale
Author: D.E. Montgomery
Pub. Date: July 2009
ISBN-978-1448636655
Do you have kids? Do you remember how they do the craziest things? Things like climbing out of their crib, taking all their clothes off, and running around the house. If so, this may be the book for you.
Despite what you might think from the name, The Adventures of Curlylocks and Stripperella is a comical and surprisingly poignant look at the lighter side of parenthood. D.E. Montgomery is a North Carolina resident, and her first novel chronicles the harrowing adventures of parenting her two small daughters (the aforementioned Curlylocks and Stripperella).

The Long Night Moon
Author: Elizabeth Towles
Publisher : Fireside Publications
Pub. Date: July 2009
ISBN-978-1-935517-00-9
I’m not usually a fan of romance or dramatic fiction, but I have found that sometimes the best part of a book is the unexpected journey it takes you on. Take The Long Night Moon, the first novel by North Carolina writer Elizabeth Towles. The story, set in Charlotte and the remote Nantahala Mountains in the 1970’s, takes you on a fascinating journey full of love, honor, and drama as it delves deeply into one family’s struggles and one woman’s life.
After the death of their socially prominent parents in a car accident, Ian Edglon is left to care for his spoiled and willful sister Darcie. When Darcie’s escapades threaten to ruin the family name, Ian relocates her to the Nantahala Mountains, where she becomes infatuated with a Cherokee man named Wa’si. Torn between the world she left behind and one she does not understand, Darcie must throw aside her childish ways and fight for the love she so desperately wants – and one she doesn’t even realize she needs.
I found that the cast of rich characters and Towles’ poetic narrative made The Long Night Moon a pleasure to read. Darcie’s story is as fascinating as the world of the Cherokee around her. It’s a tale full of tragedy and hope that captivated me. Once you crack the cover, you’ll be in for your own long night as you get lost in this timeless novel.
