Prom on a budget

Every Spring as the world thaws out and the flowers begin to bloom, scores of teenage girls head to malls and boutiques in the hunt for the perfect gown, shoes, handbags, and accessories for the pinnacle high school prom night.
The night can easily be a costly one, especially after manicures, pedicures, and an hour in the hair stylist’s chair are finished, and lastly an elegant dinner uptown and the final journey to the anticipated prom.
Prom goers can expect to spend a pretty penny on the night, but according to Patsy Street at West Stanly Christian Ministries, this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, the selection of gently used and new prom dresses at the thrift shop can cost as low as $10 and will never be more than $15.
“Most of the dresses have only been worn one time. Some of them are still brand new and have the tags on them,” said Street, manager of West Stanly Christian Ministries.
With dresses ranging in prices of $100-$500 at area boutiques and major stores like Group USA at Concord Mills, dressing for less takes on a whole new meaning. Christian Ministries carries dresses from top designers like Jessica McLintock, Mori Lee, David’s Bridal, and Morgan & Co. among others.
“You can have a wonderful evening and only pay $10 or $15. The dresses are still stylish and up to date,” says Street. “You just have to come in and see them. I guess you could say you have to see them to believe it. You don’t appreciate it until you come in.”
There are roughly 180 dresses for purchase, and each sale benefits West Stanly Christian Ministries. The Ministry is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to assist struggling families and individuals through a food pantry, onsite counseling from a pastor, and an assistance program for families in the western part of the county who can’t pay bills or rent.
Not only will prom goers save a great deal of money by purchasing a dress from the thrift shop, but they will also help support local families in need. Seventy-five percent of the sales from the thrift store go directly to assisting the ministries.
“Whatever need you may have, we may be able to reach it at West Stanly Christian Ministries, spiritually and financially,” said Street.
