Two Stanly County students, Jordan Caddell and Haley Akers, will be awarded Daughters of American Revolution scholarships this year.
Jordan Caddell will receive the NCSDAR Cordon/Street Scholarship. Last fall, Jordan was selected as the DAR Good Citizen from West Stanly High School. To receive this honor a student must demonstrate leadership, dependability, service, and patriotism in their school, home, and community. This year’s DAR Good Citizens wrote an essay on “Our American Heritage and My Responsibility to Preserve It.” Along with DAR Good Citizens from other high schools, Jordan read his essay at the local DAR chapter meeting in November. Based on his accomplishments and his essay, the Yadkin River Patriots Chapter DAR will enter Jordan’s application for a state DAR scholarship.
Jordan, the son of Dan and Fern Caddell of Oakboro, is a senior at West Stanly High School. He will attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. He plans to major in biology or chemistry on a pre-pharmacy track and then attend pharmacy school somewhere in North Carolina.
During his high school career Jordan participated in many school activities such as: JETS club, Math club, Interact club, National Honor Society, Student Council, SAVE Club, FCA, and Quiz Bowl. He served in leadership positions in all of these organizations. In addition to being named DAR Good Citizen at WSHS, he received numerous other honors and awards including: Computer Apps Award, Physical Science Award, Algebra II Honors Award, Junior Marshal, and Optimist Boy of the Year.
Jordan has many responsibilities in the music program at his church. He has worked as a volunteer at the hospital, helped with Meals on Wheels, served as a tutor, and participated in a variety of other activities in his church and community.
He has also worked as a counselor in the YMCA Summer Camp program, served as a referee for Albemarle Parks & Recreation, and refereed for the Stanly County Soccer Club.

She volunteers in the Charlotte Mecklenburg schools and has helped raise funds for the Painted Turtle, a camp for sick children.
