Heritage Days at Reed Mine
Reed Gold Mine celebrated its second annual Spring Festival on Wednesday, April 13. Hundreds of students from Cabarrus County, where the historic site is located, and neighboring counties participated in learning about what life was like during the late 1700s and early 1800s when John Reed found the first gold in the U.S., precipitating the national gold rush.
A Porter’s Ridge student tried his luck at panning for gold at the Spring Festival and found a nugget weighing 6.2 grams worth about $300. This was the second largest nugget found at the mine in the last two weeks.
