I love a good mystery. I especially love mysteries that tie to the past, like Indiana Jones or National Treasure. That is why I was especially fond of Deadly Design, the second novel in Marion Moore Hill’s Deadly Past Mystery Series (Book 1-Deadly Will). It takes place in Virginia and is a fascinating mystery full of historical fiction and murders connected to our founding fathers.
The story is about Millie Kirchner, a single mother and history buff who travels to Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest near Lynchburg, Virginia for an archeological dig. But her excitement is cut short when she arrives to find one of the interns of the dig has been murdered in nearby Highgrove House (secretly believed to have been designed by Jefferson himself). The police think everyone on the expedition, including Millie’s housemates, are suspects. But when a shocking discovery is made by the historical team, Millie must race against the clock to link the present day murders to a horrible event from the past.
I felt eager to uncover just how events in the time of Thomas Jefferson tie into the present-day events of the book, and I was drawn into both worlds with ease. If you missed book one, don’t worry; Hill makes it easy to jump right in to Millie’s adventures. Deadly Design’s intricate story proves that the sins of the past will always come back to haunt us, and is sure to thrill mystery and historical fiction fans alike.
