Back to school: Changes
By Joyce Lavene
Senior Staff Writer
Changes come to school systems each year and 2009/2010 is no exception. This year it will be even more important to keep up with changes because of budget restraints caused by the recent recession.

August 25 is the first day for students in all grades. September 7 marks the Labor Day holiday. October 29 is the end of the first nine weeks and October 30 will be a planning day for staff.

• C.C. Griffin is the Middle School for Midland students grades six, seven and eight. The start time at that school has changed as well. Students will start at 9 am and school with end at 4 pm. All upcoming six grade students need to have a booster of the Tdap vaccine. proof of vaccination is required before August 25.

Freshman Academy:
All rising freshman should plan to attend a special Freshman Orientation on Friday, August 21 from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Students will receive their bus schedules for the 2009-2010 school year during the week of August 10 . Transportation will be provided to and from orientation at the school. This will be the first run for buses for the new school year. Students should be at their bus stop approximately 20 minutes before their scheduled pick up time. This will help ensure having transportation to the orientation. Dismissal time will be at 11:30 am. Students should arrive back at their bus stops before 12:30 pm.
During orientation students will learn about being in high school, make new friends, receive their finalized class schedule, and find their classrooms to prepare for the first day of school. This is the only opportunity to receive a full schedule before the first day of school.
School officials recommend wearing comfortable clothing and planning to stay the entire time. Parents can drop off students at the front circle. Students will enter through the front lobby doors. Only CCHS rising freshmen attend this event.

Dress Code:
CCHS is amending its dress code for the 2009/2010 school year. Central Cabarrus High School recognizes that a person’s appearance is indicative of their self image and their potential conduct. What is appropriate appearance, however, in recreational or leisure situations may not be appropriate in the school environment. The dress code is designed to maximize safety and school spirit, minimize fashion competition among students, and reflect readiness for serious academic endeavor. The dress code is available online at http://www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us/central/index.html

Locust book store opens
Uwharrie Books opened in Locust on Saturday, August 1 to a good crowd. Jennifer and Shawn Chappelle joined Debbie Clineff from A Piece of Cake Bakery in this endeavor. The store at 212-2 East Main Street features new and used books along with local artisans’ and musicians’ works.
The bookstore is a labor of love for the couple, who are avid readers. This was a soft opening for the store but the Chappelles plan a grand opening and ribbon cutting on September 12, from 10 am to noon. This event will feature authors, musicians and artisans demonstrating their work.

We’ll all miss Fred Morgan
Fred T. Morgan passed away early Tuesday morning. He was one of those rare people who made the past, and the world of the unknown, come alive. He could tell a story better than most people. His love of storytelling extended to four books, but there were many more that he will never write.
He loved the Uwharries and the people who lived there with a passion that extended beyond his lifetime. He worked for 34 years as a Feature Editor for the Stanly News and Press. He also wrote for corporations such as Ford and Alcoa, and authored many magazine articles.
His published books include Ghost Tales of the Uwharries, Haunted Uwharries, The Revolt and 28 More Original Uwharrie Ghost Stories and Uwharrie Bizarres.
His fascination with the Uwharries began in high school when he learned that they are remnants of the oldest mountain range on the North American continent. After that, he explored the most rural areas his legs could take him and talked to many of the strangest characters whom he featured in Uwharrie Bizarres which was the title of his last book.
His fellow writers in Stanly County mourned his passing. “He is one of my inspirations in writing and he will be sorely missed,” Anabelle Morgan of Oakboro said.
“I will miss him as a friend and a fellow writer,” Badin author Heather Ross Miller said. “He was a great resource to our community.”
Goodbye, Fred. I loved your books as a child and as an adult. I counted meeting you and interviewing you for The Weekly Post as a great personal pleasure. I introduced my children and grandchildren to your work. You, and your work, will live on in the spirit of the magnificent Uwharries.
